One Piece Chapter 1170 spoilers hint at the narrative reason behind Luffy being nerfed during his fights against Kizaru and the Gorosei.
With the recent One Piece Chapter 1170 spoilers, Oda subtly hinted at the main reason he didn’t make Luffy go all out against Kizaru and the Gorosei in the recent anime adaptation of the Egghead Island arc. As we’ve seen, no clear victor emerged from the Luffy vs Kizaru fight, with both dealing heavy damage to each other, resulting in a draw.
Luffy’s clash against the Gorosei also went down as one of the series’ craziest and most visually insane fights. Still, Luffy once again didn’t exactly win. The Elders’ continuous regeneration made a clean sweep impossible. So the Strawhats opted for a strategic retreat. Canonically, however, it would have been easy for Luffy to win both fights, but Oda may have intentionally held that back for plot progression.
Real Reason Luffy Was Nerfed on the Egghead Island
If Luffy had actually gone all out and used his attacks coating with Conqueror’s Haki, then even the Gorosei wouldn’t have stood a chance. And it’s more of a possibility after everything that we’ve witnessed in the latest chapter spoilers.

One Piece Chapter 1170 spoilers suggest that the same kind of attack Loki used to defeat King Harald, who was also immortal. If that technique worked on someone like Harald, then Luffy, who’s way stronger, could almost certainly pull off the same feat, right?
So, the real reason it didn’t happen has to be another plot armor! If Luffy had already beaten Kizaru and the Gorosei in the Egghead Arc, it would’ve messed with the pacing and long-term stakes of the arc. But Oda needed those characters to stay relevant, at least for now.
And honestly, it fits Luffy’s personality too. Knowing how impulsive and whimsical he is, surely he doesn’t plan out every move in the heat of battle. So, it’s totally believable that he might not have even thought about coating his attacks with CoC in the moment.
This also lines up with what the anime director had instructed. According to legendary One Piece animator Vincent Chansard, Luffy wasn’t meant to be fully serious against Kizaru. The goal wasn’t for Luffy to outright destroy him, but to keep him contained and deal some solid damage.
With Conqueror’s Coating and Joy Boy’s Haki, Luffy Is Unbeatable

With Conqueror’s Coating and Joy Boy’s insane Haki pool, Luffy is basically unstoppable at this point, and it’s not even an exaggeration. He’s already breaking every known limit, and if he stacks those powers together, it’ll push him into a whole different league.
Just imagine Luffy pulling off the same move Loki used on Harald, but in full Gear 5 mode. At that point, forget the Elders, even Imu would probably tremble in fear. The Drums of Liberation would hit completely different, too.

With that much Haki backing it up, the sound alone would feel overwhelming and downright terrifying. Honestly, it’s hard not to think Oda is holding this back on purpose. When Luffy finally does go all out like that, it’s going to shake the entire world of One Piece. Don’t you also think so?
