The notice slid under the door like a digital knife. Karen stared at the rent increase in 4K horror. Four thousand five hundred a month for a nine-hundred-dollar beta-level apartment. Jason’s energy drink hit the floor.

His aura went gray. “Mom, check the patch notes. High-speed Wi-Fi is now fifty dollars an hour. There’s a noise complaint tax for streaming.
We’re getting nerfed in real time. ”
Karen was already dialing the landlord, jabbing the screen with a manicured nail. “Pick up. Pick up.
I’m a main character. I have influence. ”
The automated voice cut through her panic. “Your call has been placed on mute by the server admin.
Please grind harder to unlock customer support. Have a low-vibe day. ”
Jason stared at the floor, broken. “Mom, I think we just got skill-checked.
We have twelve dollars in our shared wallet. ”
Across town, Barbara watched her daughter and grandson spiral on a hidden security feed from her penthouse. They were crying in the hallway over a piece of paper she’d generated with a single click. She laughed, quiet and surgical.
Karen, you wanted me to yeet myself? The yeet worked. I yeeted myself all the way to the final stage. She didn’t call them.
That would be mercy. Instead, she posted a story on the burner account she knew Karen stalked religiously. A mustard-yellow gold watch against the city skyline. Caption: *New server, who this?
#highvibeon #LegacyTaren*
Karen saw the post and froze mid-cry. “That robe. That watch. That’s Grandma’s yellow vibe.
Is she flexing on us from a whale account? ”
Jason’s mouth fell open. “Mom, Grandma is a script kitty. She hacked the lottery.
We didn’t kick her out. She escaped the low-level map and left us here to rot. ”
Barbara poured herself tea, slow and deliberate, and looked directly into the camera. “Phase three begins tomorrow.
The free trial of my life is officially expired. ”
Karen and Jason spent the next week drowning. Karen screamed into a pillow. “I can’t believe I have to apply for a nine-to-five.
This is cringe. ”
Jason’s applications went nowhere. Fifty remote gigs, instant rejections. The entire job server seemed to have blacklisted their IP address.
Barbara had infiltrated the local employment map. She was the final boss of the entire hiring sector. They didn’t know that yet. They would learn.
Sterling Global Solutions gleamed downtown, all mustard-yellow glass and S-tier aesthetics. Karen walked into the executive suite wearing a fast-fashion suit that felt buggy. She plastered on her high-vibe smile for the receptionist. “I’m here for the executive content manager position.
I have twelve hundred followers on TikTok. I’m basically an A-tier asset. ”
The receptionist didn’t blink. “The CEO will render your interview shortly.
”
Karen stepped into the office, already feeling her life upgrades loading. The room dripped with whale-tier luxury. She spread her arms wide. “Hello.
I’m here to main-character this company. I’m ready to buff your social presence. ”
The chair turned around. Barbara sat in the admin seat wearing Versace glasses and a mustard-yellow silk power suit.
She held a gold-plated tablet. Her drip was so heavy it lagged the room. Karen’s jaw hit the floor. “Mom?
What are you doing in the admin chair? Did you simp your way into a cleaning job? ”
Barbara took a slow sip of diamond-filtered water. “Sit down.
Your ping is too high. I don’t simp for loot. I spawn it. I’m the CEO of Legacy T Holdings.
I bought this company while you were AFK. ”
“You hacked the lottery for eighty-nine million and yeeted us into a rent trap? ”
“No, Karen. ” Barbara leaned forward, her aura turning obsidian.
“What’s toxic is griefing your mother for twenty years. You wanted a new meta? Here it is. That executive position is for main characters only.
I have a special quest for you. Lobby cleaner. Someone to delete the trash files from the breakroom. Minimum wage tier.
No fast-travel allowance. ”
Karen stood there, buffering. “Accept the quest,” Barbara said, “or disconnect into homelessness. ”
Back at the apartment, Jason grinded on a dead laptop.
A global broadcast pinged from Legacy T Holdings. “New job listing. Professional data entry noob. Ten dollars an hour.
Must work in mustard-yellow basement. Zero Wi-Fi. ”
Jason read it out loud. “Who would sign up for this trash tier—”
Notification.
*User Lil G has been auto-assigned to this quest by the Debt Collector bot. Failure to log in will result in a permanent ban from the apartment server. *
He fell out of his chair. Grandma was stream-sniping his entire life.
Barbara watched his collapse on a hidden cam, adjusting her glasses. “Phase four has started. They wanted me to log off. I rebooted the whole system.
”
She pulled out a cigar she had no intention of smoking, just for the boss aesthetic. One week of manual labor. One week of blistered hands and corroded souls. Karen had spent her days scrubbing the CEO’s private bathroom, which smelled biohazard-tier.
Jason’s mental health stats were deep in the red. Karen whispered like a low-level villain. “This is unplayable. We need to raid Mom’s digital vault.
You’re a hacker, right? Find the loot key. ”
Jason cracked his knuckles, trying to look alpha. “I’ve been pinging her firewall all night.
Found a back door through her Legacy T rewards app. I’m going to drain her assets and transfer the gold. We’ll respawn in Vegas by morning. #hackerlife.
”
Jason couldn’t install a printer without a tutorial video. He was trying to raid a woman with an ex-special-ops security team. Barbara sat in her penthouse wearing noise-canceling headphones, watching a heat map of her network on a wall-sized screen. A red icon pulsed: *Intrusion detected.
User Lil G. *
She bit into a two-hundred-dollar organic apple. “The script kitty is brute-forcing my account. How cringe.
Mr. Sterling, initiate counter-grief protocol. Nuke their digital footprint. ”
“With pleasure, madam.
Shall I freeze the assets? ”
“Don’t freeze them. Delete the database. I want zero-balance energy.
”
Jason was rage-typing. “I see the loot pool. Eighty-nine million. Wait.
Why is the counter going down? The gold is despawning. ”
“Press enter! Hit confirm!
” Karen screamed over his shoulder. A popup hit the screen. *User Lil G has been banned for exploiting. *
His phone buzzed.
*Your account balance is now $15,000. Reason: server maintenance fees and moral bankruptcy tax. *
Karen checked her own phone. Her credit score had dropped to zero.
Apple Pay disabled. “Jason,” she whispered, “we can’t even buy a McDouble. ”
The next morning, they limped into the Legacy T Holdings lobby, raggedy and debuffed. Barbara stood flanked by two level-one-hundred security guards.
“I heard there was a glitch last night,” Barbara said through Prada sunglasses. “Someone tried to grief the admin account. Clown move. ”
Karen fell to her knees.
“Mom. Please. We’re hard stuck. Zero stats.
The Wi-Fi is dead. Just give us a small loan of a million dollars and we’ll log off forever. ”
Barbara leaned down, voice cold steel. “A small loan?
We don’t give handouts to toxic players. Your rent just double-buffed. Nine thousand a month. ”
Jason cried in low resolution.
“Grandma, please. I’ll delete my Twitch. I’ll grind for real. Just give me a pity loot box.
”
“I have a pity loot box for you. ” Barbara smiled. “The loading dock. Five thousand crates of Legacy T need to be manually sorted by serial number.
Complete the quest by midnight, and I might unfreeze your bus pass credit. ”
The bus pass credit. She was gatekeeping the whole city. Barbara turned, her silk cape fluttering in the high-vibe AC.
“One more thing. I’ve updated the apartment terms of service. If I see another hacking attempt, I’m deleting the front door key code. You’ll be spawning on the sidewalk server.
”
The elevator doors closed with a gold-plated thud. Karen and Jason stood in the lobby, staring at a mustard-yellow mop and a mountain of tea crates. Fifteen hours later, they were still grinding, knees screaming, spines curved, aura completely non-existent. The despair meter had maxed out.
They were hard-stuck in the labor loop. Barbara rendered in the distance, walking with a diamond-studded cane she didn’t need, purely for the flex. “Look at my elite task force. You guys look buggy.
Is the manual labor quest too high-ping for you? ”
Karen dropped to her knees on the cold concrete. “Mom. Stop the griefing.
We’re desynced. We can’t feel our legs. Just transfer a pity payment so we can go home and log off for a week. ”
Barbara looked down at her daughter, then at her grandson, both of them broken on the floor of her empire.
She tilted her head, savored the moment, and tapped the cane once against the floor. “Home? ” Barbara said softly. “I repossessed home yesterday.
You’re not going anywhere. The grind continues until your debt is cleared. And your debt,” she smiled, “is infinite. ”
She walked past them toward the elevator, not looking back.
The doors closed. Karen and Jason remained on the concrete, surrounded by crates and mops, staring at the mustard-yellow walls of the real world server. No free trials left. No respawn points.
Just the endless, level-one grind ahead.
